ISO 9001 Surveillance audit is required to be conducted every year after an ISO Certificate is issued. Although the certificate issued after an ISO 9001 Certification Audit is valid for three years from the date of issuance, the auditors from the certifying body come back at least once a year to verify that you still meet the requirements of the ISO standard. This is called ISO Surveillance Audit.
This is also an on-site audit for the next two years, until your recertification audit on the third year of your cycle. After the third year, the next cycle starts, which is also three years in duration. These audits are more or less like a certification audit, but no new certificates are issued as the purpose of this audit is to validate the original ISO certificate issued. Most certification bodies conduct one surveillance audit a year
