ISO 9001 certification cost and consultation cost can vary based on the amount of service required to implement a quality management system that meets the requirements of ISO 9001. These are the fees that you pay to an ISO consultant to prepare all the necessary and mandated documentation such as the Quality Manual, Procedures, Forms, Records, etc, and guide you through the process such as internal audit, management review meetings, identifying non-conformities, correcting any non-conformities that are identified and implementing the Quality Management System.

ISO develops International Standards like ISO 9001, ISO 13485, etc, but they are neither involved in the certification of ISO standards nor do they issue any certificates. However, organizations must go through an annual onsite surveillance audit during this time to establish consistency that you still meet the requirements of ISO 9001 standards. This is called the ISO Surveillance Audit.

After the third year, the next cycle starts, which is also three years in duration. This is called ISO Recertification Audit.  These audits are more or less like a certification audit, but no new certificates are issued as the purpose of this audit is to validate the original ISO certificate issued.

Most certification bodies conduct one surveillance audit a year. The cost of an ISO 9001 Surveillance audit could be 25 – 35 % less than the ISO 9001 certification cost as you have a quality management system and a process in place.
